Road Safety Concerns A368

Reported anonymously at 11:33, Wed 18 August 2021

I write with sadness upon hearing of a recent fatality of a young cyclist in the lanes surrounding Bishop Sutton. As a cyclist and resident of the parish I felt compelled to contact you regarding a number of ongoing concerns. I reside within the Summer Leaze development having moved to the village 6yrs ago. During this time it has become more apparent around the dangers of navigating the roads and lanes on foot and bike. The speed in which vehicles approach and pass through the village via the A368 is excessive and dangerous and is only a matter of time before serious harm is caused to a pedestrian. Is any consideration being given to speed calming measures or a change in speed restriction in a village that is densely populated with residential homes and schools? It is clear that the change from national speed limit to a 30mph limit occurs far to close to the village and as a result vehicles are invariably travelling at an excessive speed when approaching the bend near to the Bonhill Road junction. Many of the other neighbouring villages and towns have successfully adopted a 20mph limit to mitigate the dangers to pedestrians and cyclists and I am wondering why our village hasn’t followed suit. Every time I walk my juvenile daughter to pre school I have an uneasy feeling of having to run the gauntlet; often with speeding heavy goods vehicles passing within a metre of a narrow footpath. There are no pedestrian crossings or speed deterrents at any point through the village; just some temporary yellow signs requesting drivers to provide sufficient passing space.
