Gulls rip open rubbish bags in central Bath every evening

Reported anonymously at 19:19, Fri 5 August 2022

Every evening around 5pm, restaurants and cafes in central Bath leave thin rubbish bags full of food and other waste for the Suez collection teams to pick up. However, long before they can get there, gulls swoop down and tear the bags open, scattering the contents, which rats and foxes then pick up through the night. This is a problem throughout central Bath, but particularly at the junction of Bartlett St. and George St., down Milsom St., and at the top and bottom of Union St. Yesterday astonished tourists were taking videos of the gulls ripping the bags open to get at the food inside, much to my embarrassment and shame. We will never end the gulls problem in Bath if these establishments are allowed to use these useless bags and fill them with food waste. Please Bath Council, do something about this, then perhaps we won’t be woken up every morning at 5am so often by these screeching (but ‘protected’ birds). The rubbish scattered around Bath is disgusting and the way restaurants put their waste out on the street should be prevented. Please make sure they use gull proof bags..or come down on them. Someone needs to walk around central Bath at 5pm to get a feel for the problem..it’s out of control. This is a real health hazard for those of us that live in the area and makes our city look awful.
