Cyclists riding on a designated public footpath

Reported in the Obstruction on road or pavement category anonymously at 12:41, Thu 11 April 2019

Sent to Bath and North East Somerset Council 5 minutes later. Council ref: 1600679.

This is a narrow bridge that is designated in law as a public footpath unless it has officially been stopped up. An inadequate sign that only asked cyclists to dismount, rather than compelling them to by law, on the Locksbrook road end of the bridge has been removed, either officially or by other persons. Pedestrians of all ages and abilities are being harassed by cyclists to move over and let them pass and in some instances collisions have taken place. Unless a legal stopping up has taken place cyclists must dismount and walk over the bridge. A new sign is required that stipulates it is legally a footpath only and cyclists must dismount needs to be put in place at each end of the bridge

  • April to August, and the council is "looking at this issue"...? How long is it likely to be before someone is injured or involved in a confrontation? I have seen several situations which have had the potential to suddenly flare up, because there is confusion about whether cycling is permitted. Even if it is, it must be made clear that in all circumstances cyclists must wait behind pedestrians, only proceed at walking pace, and move to the side and stop to let buggies and wheelchairs pass in the other direction. A minority of cyclists are either racing across the bridge or harassing pedestrians, bringing the cycling community into disrepute and causing a danger to other users of the bridge. It is action on this bridge which is needed NOW, it is not adequate to say you are thinking about providing a cycle route across some other bridge at some unspecified time in the future.
