Constant water from highway drain - now freezing and causing issue on road, pavement and building

Reported via desktop in the Flooding of a road or pavement category anonymously at 16:09, Thu 31 December 2020

Sent to Bath and North East Somerset Council less than a minute later. Council ref: 2455546.

Ever since this road was resurfaced in the summer, there is constantly water on top of this manhole cover. Day and night, every day there is water here in the middle of the lane. Now, it is creating ice all over the lane and pavement, making it dangerous for pedestrians and vehicles. Thin layers of ice, one layer on top of the next - super slippy. The water from the manhole cover is also being sprayed onto the adjacent buildings, and freezing - this ice can't be doing the old mortar any good. If this lane is gritted, it will soon be washed away by the water in this spot. This issue did not exist before the resurfacing.

  • Treacherous ice! Part 1. Water continuously leaking from BT cover is washing away all grit. This issue has only occurred after the works to replace the drains. Very dangerous for walkers, cyclists and motorists. Also causing water and ice damage to lime walls of Brookleaze House and Barn Cottage's Barn.

  • Treacherous ice! Photos Part 2. The gritters regularly do this route, but the constant flow of water is washing the grit away. The water is set to Goldilocks setting: not too much, but just enough, so the water is spread by passing cars to the bottom of Stockwood Hill, into Stockwood Vale, and along past Tanyard and round the bend up into the Old Bristol Road. The water is just enough that it causes layer upon layer of ice to form. It is once again treacherous for cyclists and walkers. Could we get some more grit here? Some ice signs? This lane has never been like this before, so road and pavement users won't be expecting this.

  • With the recent cold weather this puddle is now very icy and the spray from passing vehicles has made the pavement icy I slipped here and nearly fell into the road as a car was passing, Also vehicles carry the water along the road making a large area icy. The whole area is now very dangerous.
