Void under pavement and road
Reported via desktop in the Pavement damage category anonymously at 01:32, Mon 11 January 2021
Sent to Bath and North East Somerset Council less than a minute later. Council ref: 2471109.
I would be grateful if this email could be forwarded to the relevant person in the Highways Department as soon as possible.
We are having our garden wall repaired, starting Monday morning. Our garden is slightly below the level of the footpath. During clearing of the garden in preparation for this on Sunday, we could see from a small hole in the garden wall a void going under both the footpath and the road. We could see that the void is lined with ashlar blocks. It is at least 8 feet long, by about 3 feet wide, and the depth is 6 feet at least But we could not ascertain the total extent of the void without specialist equipment.
Our house was built in about 1935, and before that the area was an orchard, and there are no related structures now or in recent times.
Our builder arrives Monday morning . We would be grateful if you could come to look before the walling closes this off again. The wall to be repaired is on the boundary between our garden and the pavement. The void lies under the width of the pavement and then seems to go out under the road as well. The measurements were made using an 8 feet cane stick.
We are concerned about possible safety issues for people walking on the pavement or using the adjoining road. The footpath is a very popular route for walkers. We presume the Council will need to deal with this soon? We would be grateful to hear from you urgently as our builder will be rebuilding our wall shortly.
We look forward to hearing from you asap. Thanks.

Having viewed the hole in the wall with a bright torch this morning we have discovered that the chamber is much much larger than what we originally thought. The void that we could see opens out under the pavement to a much wider area. I have tried to photograph this without success.
We look forward to hearing from you very soon.
