Poor visibility

Reported via desktop in the Vegetation blocking road or sign visibility - In a residential area category by John Mascall at 11:36, Monday 26 April 2021

Sent to Bath and North East Somerset Council less than a minute later. Council ref: 2691648.

When the big steel planters were first installed I complained that it was an accident waiting to happen. The reply was that it had been assessed as safe. I want to repeat my comment now. It is very difficult to see oncoming traffic coming from the Bath direction when exiting Snow Hill.

  • Absolutely, I've complained about the one at Bedford Street. An accident waiting to happen. I have to creep out to see traffic, into the bike lane. On one occasion a bike was coming so I went to reverse but couldn't as a pedestrian was crossing behind my car. I've been told by the council 'not our responsibility'. They're managed by Genesis Trust who, to best of my knowledge didn't reply. The council said, 'they've been no accidents yet so we see no reason to do anything'. Astonishing.

  • For those of us in standard cars the visibility of this junction when exiting Snowhill onto London Road is atrocious. You literally cannot see cars heading East coming towards you because of the massive steel planter on the corner of the pavement. To exit the junction you just have to edge out until the bonnet of your car s halfway across the path of eastbound traffic before you can see them. The traffic on London Road is not flowing slowly either. Last night I was nearly broadsided trying to exit this junction at 8:30pm. There is going to be a horrendous crash here if the layout is not changed soon. See below link for government advice on the layout of junctions from which the diagram was taken. It is quite clear that with the large plater in its current position this junction does not comply with this advice document. government/ uploads/ system/ uploads/ attachment_data/ file/ 341513/ pdfmanforstreets.pdf

  • The planters here mean you can not see traffic coning from your right on London Rd. Planters should be removed.

  • I agree - since changing my car for a much smaller one (mini) it's impossible to see anything other than lorries/buses/SUVs over the planter approaching the junction from Bath. I have contacted the council before about this - but apparently not their problem.

  • I pulled out this morning and only when I got into the road did I see the bicycle coming. Luckily it was far enough away not to cause a collision. It seems that the council are waiting for an accident to happen before they act. I'd like to think this wasn't true.
