Subsidence at the Edge of the Carriageway

Reported via desktop in the Potholes & road surface category anonymously at 19:18, Thu 1 July 2021

Sent to Bath and North East Somerset Council 5 minutes later. Council ref: 2833684.

Some years ago, the bank of the Cam Brook suffered subsidence at this point on Church Lane. Gabions had been installed at some previous time nearby, but the question as to who was responsible for remedial action here was unresolved. JSP barriers were put in place to mark the hazard to traffic. Since then, the barriers have degraded and/or been seriously damaged and, most recently, become overgrown and pushed back into the vegetation. As far as the parish council is aware, the extent of the subsidence and the risk of a vehicle driving unintentionally into the void has not been assessed for years. Currently (see photo,) the barrier feet (the yellow plastic T pieces now some 12" below the road surface) are hidden completely and are no longer on solid ground. The subsidence appears to have worsened to the extent that it is now less than a tyre's width from the edge of the tarmac. Recent mowing of the 1m edge of the carriageway has further covered/disguised the fact that there is any danger at this point. There appears now to be a serious risk of someone unintentionally driving into the hole to avoid/pass persistent oncoming traffic - a frequent challenge here - and sinking towards the brook, causing vehicle damage and personal injury and, maybe, breaking the aged barrier to roll several feet down into the brook. The parish council would appreciate an update on the assessed risk(s) here and an updated statement from BANES as to whether any remedial action(s) should be put in hand and, if so, by who.
