Blockage on Midford Brook at bridge over B3110
Reported via desktop in the Flooding of a road or pavement category anonymously at 14:26, Mon 16 August 2021
Sent to Bath and North East Somerset Council less than a minute later. Council ref: 2938678.
There is an amount of debris lodged on the centre support arch on the upstream side of Midford Bridge, including a large long branch of a tree. This is not an immediate concern but when the waters rise on Midford Brook, it is likely to be the cause of the brooks backing up and thereby increasing the risk of flooding to upstream properties. I am not sure how long the debris has been there but the long branch is fairly recent. The branch is above water levels at the moment but is likely to collect further debris when the waters rise, thus creating a major blockage. Clearing the upstream of the bridge soon would be much easier and cheaper than trying to do so when the waters are higher.

Thank you for your report. General clearing out of a watercourses is the responsibility of the bank owners either side of the watercourse, commonly known as the riparian owners but they are not obliged to clear out anything unless its causing a flood risk. Branches in a river do not qualify as an obstruction or a flood risk and the team have confirmed the vegetation is not a hazard.
