Dangerous road traffic condition A37 n/r Police lane
Reported via desktop in the Railings, bollard, & post damage category by Steve Harries at 11:14, Wed 5 January 2022
Sent to Bath and North East Somerset Council less than a minute later. Council ref: 3217228.
My understanding is that BANES are preparing to remove the safety crossing island that is Nth of the Nth bound bus lane and stop. This is willfully negligent regarding pedestrian safety
To begin with, the original installation was deeply flawed. Having the pedestrian island after the bus stop invites pedestrians to cross in front of the bus, a basic road safety no no. As can be seen from the photo, vehicles travelling Nth Bound when they encounter a stationary bus will not see the island ahead, and a reckless drive might legally overtake the parked bus only to find the island (and possibly a pedestrian) preventing their access to the left lane. This results in vehicles jumping over the island to avoid head on encounters with Sth bound traffic they were blinded to by the bus.
Banes' solution, with cars in mind, is to remove the safety island. That will result in vehicles cutting back in sooner to the left lane in front of the bus and a much greater risk of collision with a pedestrian who chances to cross in front of the bus!
The only viable solution if considering safety is to move the bus stop Nth, and the island Sth so that traffic has clear visibility of both and pedestrians are safe. Vehicles then would realise that overtaking at that point is not safe, in fact it should be double yellow lined.

So none of the pedestrian related safety measures have happened. The drop kerb removed forcing those exiting the bus with prams/children down the hill some 100's of metres away from the Police Lane access that was opposite through to Hillcrest that the stops service.
The footpaths are not maintained well with detritus and slippery mud covering them and overgrown shrubbery heading North from the stop the only access now for people who choose to find a dropped kerb crossing with refuge.
Nothing to address the risk of vehicles overtaking the bus with limited forward visibility.
The 30mph gateway north bound should have been extended south to where the 40mph gateway is, as itge latter approaches a tight slow turn and the encourages acceleration back to 40 before the 30 gateway in only a matter of 400m
BaNEs can do more if the Highways team were not so focused on solutions that solely reduce their maintenance costs when road designs for pedestrians are fundamentally flawed by their design.
With the new Highway code protecting bikes and pedestrians I feel this could amount to professional neglect by the Highways team.
