Church Lane, Northend - damage caused by spring under lane.
Reported via desktop in the Flooding of a road or pavement category by Bath and North East Somerset Council at 09:55, Thu 27 October 2022
Sent to Bath and North East Somerset Council less than a minute later. Council ref: 3918035.
About a year ago I reported that a spring was undermining Church Lane, Northend and that I thought that it may at some stage need to be piped or ditched. Your good people came out and patched the problem area with a slab of new tarmac which relieved the symptoms for some time. There remain two problems that I can see The spring continues to trickle water across the ramped entrance to the Church, used by those whose mobility means they choose not to use the steps. The following pictures were taken on the 25th September this year, following months of drought and before any significant rain. They show that the water spreads across the lower end of Church Lane and over Northend. My concern is that in icy conditions this section of the lane will be treacherous for churchgoers and vehicles. . The heavy rains over the past weekend swelled the spring to the extent that it is lifting and breaking up the road surface in the same area as the repair last year. When I pressed my foot on the new slab it moved a couple of inches up and down suggesting it is being separated from the ground by the water. The damage shown all appeared at the weekend of 22/23rd October and it seems that it will be further broken up with each heavy rainstorm.

Although I appreciate that this report is in progress, since the original report was submitted the state of the lane has continued to deteriorate. There are now additional cracks which have started to appear both above and below the ones reported and water is released through them. As we are heading towards colder months this lane is going to become a skating rink along with the adjoining road where the water follows onto.

As predicted, this road has now been covered in a blanket of ice for the last couple of days and nights. It's great that some ice warning signs have been placed on the road along Northend however that's no help to those using this road for access or pedestrians, perhaps a grit bin may have been of more use. It is dangerous and needs sorting ASAP.

This spring continues to be a problem causing sheet ice across the whole of Northend in cold weather, with ice preventing access to the disabled access into St Johns Church. When will action be taken? Thanks
