Sent to Bath and North East Somerset Council less than a minute later. Council ref: 4158334.

Moderated by Bath and North East Somerset Council at 11:56, Tue 21 February 2023

Hello, How are you? This is a street light on the corner of Circus Mews and Circus Place. It's been like that for a week or two. I think the bulb may need replacing by the look of it. Thanks!

  • National Grid are unable to easily restore supply using the cables as they currently are. To overcome this issue we are looking to upgrade the equipment and provide an alternative supply to this lighting unit. We are sorry the light will be out for a while longer until this work take place. We shall add further information here when available

  • This light has been out for three months and the scarcity of light in this section of the street is making the area unnecessarily hazardous. It's a simple issue to fix: simply needs some action by the council. As time wears on, the chance of there being an incident, with the lack of lighting being a contributory factor, becomes more and more likely.

  • Further to our comments above, as the lantern is located on the wall of offices, permission is being sought from the business to install the new conduit needed to restore supply to the light.

Once permission has been granted, we hope to proceed to install a new feeder pillar, conduit to the lantern and upgrade the lighting equipment itself.

We hope you appreciate this is not straight forward fix and although the light will be out for a while longer, the proposed works are required to upgrade the supply to the light and for ease of future maintenance.

We are sorry for any inconvenience caused in the meantime and will proceed with the works as soon as we are able.

  • I understand that permission is being sought from the business to install the new conduit needed to restore supply to the light.

I'm assuming that this is being done through semaphore or a series of beacons located on the coast of Tierra del Fuego and look forward to an update on progress soon.

In fairness, the company may have chosen to simply ignore the council's communication and bask instead in the warmth offered by last year's profit margin, if not the light from a functioning street lamp.

  • Everyone understands that these things take time and this light has only had a problem since the beginning of the year.

    See you in four weeks!

  • We are waiting for confirmation that National Grid have isolated power to the lantern at source which is within the building. Once this has been confirmed we can proceed to carry our maintenance of the light, which involves refurbishment and reinstallation of the lantern.

  • Hole's been dug, power routed to the stanchion, hole's been filled in. Getting closer to completion.

Unfortunately, because of the hot weather, the mortar between the paving dried too quickly and is already the general consistency of a box of Bath Oliver's that your Uncle Hector sat on before tea on a scorching day in June.

Still, the team will be able to come back and fix it before Michaelmas.

    Carry on.

  • Well, I don't know if this is the resolution or not but seemingly, having identified there was a fault with the light and having gone to the trouble of digging up the pavement to correct the mains feed, the present situation is that someone's nicked it.

  • The manufacturer has confirmed they intend to return the lantern to us early August. We shall aim to re-fit the lantern as soon as possible after it is received.

  • Well it's been fun, and we've shared a few stories and had a good laugh or two but all things come to an end and this light is now in place with a functioning bulb. The other lights on the street have a nostalgic smouldering yellow glow and are in keeping with the aesthetic of the area. They hark back to whimsical notions of consulting detectives roaming the sulphurous streets of Victorian Britain. The new light uses a harsh, stark modern bulb with piercing internal reflections that cast a cold white light, exuding all the warmth of a Siberian gulag in the Winter of 1956. Can't help thinking it would have made more sense to use a bulb similar to the ones already in use as they are definitively better. Still, who's complaining?
