Windrush, Upper Bristol Road, Clutton
Reported via desktop in the Dangerous road surface (including ice, mud, spillage or debris) category by David Morrison at 15:17, Friday 17 February 2023
Sent to Bath and North East Somerset Council less than a minute later. Council ref: 4241655.
Hole in Road. It has been repaired three times before.
THIS IS URGENT, it would be better that you had inspected it as you know this is a recurring problem that will not be sorted in any meaningful way until the storm water pipe taking the road drainage across is rebedded. Just filling the hole in means the lorries re compact the surface causing more rumbling noises (while the hole is there the noise and house shaking is abated), which keeps us awake all night for many nights as it bounces on the pipe below and the pipe on the previous road surface below (see history of road raising).
However the risk to highway users is now much greater and waiting for your inspection to pick it up may never happen (I reported it to your Ward Councillor for Clutton 10 days after your advert in BANES magazine about how good highway inspections are).
If you just fill more material in it breaks up again and gathers under the pipe and slowly pushes the pipe up towards the surface, undulating the road. Then the surface breaks again relieving the pressure on the surface and it is all pleasantly quiet at night, then the hole just gets bigger and bigger. The ground then reverberates to the vehicle movements shaking my house more, you can the see the visual cracks appearing in my property should you wish. It is difficult (as per your request not to be critical of others) when consistent the same approach is taken again and again at repair (the three patches are visible) is carried out when it clearly doesn’t work, then seems to me to be a Health and Safety issue to address as the hole that exists now is the same as the one that existed when the surface first failed after the trench was put across the road. However, thank you for dealing with this swiftly.
