Large dead Willow tree on riverbank and road edge

Reported via desktop in the Trees and woodland category by Phil Harding at 15:37, Friday 22 September 2023

Sent to Bath and North East Somerset Council less than a minute later. Council ref: 5021938.

The large Willow tree opposite the property known as Sheldrake in Mead Lane, Saltford, is clearly dead (a local arboriculturalist has confirmed this) - see photograph. There is a clear danger that autumn/winter storm winds could cause the dead tree to fall into the river (boats are moored nearby) blocking navigation of the river and/or across the single track lane that is currently the sole access to homes, the sailing club and businesses in Mead lane as well as Wessex Water Sewage Treatment Works where major construction activity is currently underway for expansion of the site's capacity and for the installation of a new access bridge - several lorries use this road for access to Wessex Water many times a day. Furthermore, if the whole tree falls in one go, it could rip out a large chunk of the riverbank undermining the road and also breaking away parts of the bio-engineered rock armour installed by B&NES Council in 2005 to protect the riverbank and roadway from river flow erosion. An urgent inspection is recommended and removal of the tree before autumn/winter storm winds take it down. In recent times this tree has dropped large branches into the roadway, but now the whole tree is dead and needs removing on safety grounds. As can be seen ion the photograph, a narrow boat is currently moored very close to and partially under the tree.
