Cypress tree showing movement Hedgemead Park

Reported via desktop in the Trees and woodland category anonymously at 12:14, Thursday 7 November 2024

Sent to Bath and North East Somerset Council less than a minute later. Council ref: 6705326.

The issue was the subject of FixMyStreet ref: 2572497 from 2021 - the base of the trunk was showing signs of decay.

I'm reporting it again because while the tree has always leaned, it's never moved, but recently the entire tree's lean has abruptly increased (about 0.5 to 0.75 metres lateral movement at a height of ~25 metres with the hinge at the base of the trunk). I noticed this from the changed position of its outline relative to the adjacent tree, which caught my eye, as did the fact that the leader at the top of the tree was no longer vertical.

The culprit may be the progression in the decay at the base of its trunk, e.g. now visible on the 'Uphill' side of the trunk, at the foot of the streak that runs down the bark from the attachment point of one of its branches.

I've not checked the extent to which the wood at the base of the trunk is cheesy as the test would need to be intrusive - but usefully an animal has stepped in to prove the condition of the timber, as it has easily dug a burrow into what was previously timber and is now cheesy - on the west side of its trunk.

I've taken a photo this morning and will take another tomorrow and in 7 days as that will help indicate if the lean has settled or is progressive on a 24 hour or 7 day timescale.
