Planned Roadworks QD0193004679

Reported via desktop in the Potholes & road surface category anonymously at 20:47, Tue 22 April 2025

Sent to Bath and North East Somerset Council less than a minute later. Council ref: 7467345.

Hello

I hope you are well

I am writing to represent my concerns regarding planned roadworks reference QD0193004679

I am greatly concerned about the impact these roadworks will have in their current proposed format.

These roadworks appear to be taking place on limeburn hill and wells rd for a period of around 4 weeks from 28th April. This appears to be a full closure at all hours of the day?

I am concerned it will effectively cut off the commuting hubs of the chew valley for a month!

Diversion routes will only be via the A38 or A37 and there appears to be no plan for compensatory measures. (An example would be re-prioritisation of traffic turning right on to the A38 towards Bristol after Winford via some temporary lights).

I am asking if it would be possible to revisit the current format of the plans and hope that a more sensible version can be planned?

Does it need to be a 24 hour closure? could it be day time/night time as previously planned/advertised? could it be done one lane at a time? could it be done in a way which enables a diversion via chew hill once the segment between chew hill and dundry is complete?

I hope this can be looked at and planned in a more sensible manner

Many thanks for your time

Hello I'm sure I speak for many people at this time in respect of the above roadworks. This work on Limeburn Hill and Chew Hill doesn't seem to be very well planned, and unfortunately BANES are continuing to extend the deadline for the works to be completed which is isn’t very professional, BANES should have made an allowance for works with an adequate timescale. From the extended deadline to 24h (by BANES) it appears that work hasn’t increased, unfortunately I can see there is no one working there at night, and we can see BANES are far from finishing the works, so I wouldn’t be surprised if there isn’t another extension upon the already extended programme! First of all, the diverted routes are really unclear and confusing, when following the routes positioned by BANES council, there are places where no signs are visible so you have to use your satnav to find your route. This is ok for some road users, but not for all especially for the older age group who are really struggling. Why wasn't it a consideration to do the work to Limeburn Hill and Chew Hill at separate times? Having both roads closed at the same time is causing considerable disruption to the local community in all aspects. I've met quite a few older people on Upton Lane, Northwick Road, East Dundry Lane Winford and Dundry Lane who can’t revers their cars and have said that they are struggling to get to the Doctors! Children are struggling to get to school especially during exams which are now in progress. For example my daughter went to school this morning for her maths exam stressed because of the access and traffic, so it’s pretty obvious that these considerations haven’t been considered when the planning work application was approved. Chew Magna this morning 11.06.2025 was grid locked for 30mins mainly due to parked cars and buses trying to get through. Why didn’t the council remove the allowance or partly reduce the parking especially at the top of Chew Magna Highstreets where traffic congestion is concentrated.

Also the diverted routes are clearly in need of fixing which should have been done before this work went ahead on Limeburn Hill and Chew Hill. There are only limited routes for the local community to get down to Chew Stoke and Chew Magna, these routes are appalling and in need of resurfacing, clearing of rubbish and the cutting back of hedge rows hasn’t been done. A trip that should have taken me 10mins this morning to get to Chew Stoke took me 1hour. There is a person above who has put forward sensible examples for the council to consider, this was put forward on the 11th of April which include. 1. Re-prioritisation of traffic turning right on to the A38 towards Bristol after Winford via some temporary lights. 2. Revisit the current format of the plans and hope that a more sensible version can be planned? 3. Does it need to be a 24 hour closure? 4. Could it be day time/night time as previously planned/advertised? 5. Could it be done in a way which enables a diversion via chew hill once the segment between chew hill and Dundry is complete?

It is now the 11th of June and none of these sensible points have been put into action, in fact there has been no change since the work was started! So it’s just another good example where the general public is ignored. BANES Councils extension to the programme of works isn’t going to work as there is no one work on it at night? I would have said the following points; 1. Introduce parking restrictions in Chew Magna and Windford at peak times. 2. Introduce traffic lights to ease congestion at various points 3. Limit traffic coming from the airport at peak times 4. Introduce a bus service to get down Limeburn Hill and Chew Hill at peak times 5. Change the road closure schedule. Just to round up, there have been no workmen on Limeburn Hill or Chew Hill during the night, working on the road with 24h closure without workmen won’t work.

  • Storm water missing most drains that were supposed to be installed off the highway the road has started splitting and subsiding already and still floods on the corner of chew hill junction a good use of £750000 !
