Please stop cutting the beautiful verges in Wellow

We as a village have asked time and time again for the beautiful flowers that adorn the pavement and walls on the high street opposite the school to be left. We will happily garden this area and do. It’s a stunning flowery display that everyone loves. And yet, again and again our plants are strimmed and sprayed to the ground. In the churchyard glyphosate is used. And today the council was strimming the clematis and centranthus growing in the walls opposite the school so that motorists ‘could see the wall’. Motorists need to drive at 20mph in our village and yet they regularly drive at 50mph. Some pretty flowers in a wall will help them slow down and not drive too close to pedestrians and other roads users - they are not ‘in the way’. Plants cool our environments, slow storm water, clean polluted air, provide all the oxygen we breathe, and feed all the insects that we need for pollination. Please can banes council stop killing them unnecessarily?

  • Thank you for your report. We have spoken to our grounds team and they are already aware not to cut the flowers on the section opposite the school. The only area that is on the Council's ground maintenance schedule is the steep verge by the Church. This is on a 1 cut per year with strips along the edges cut more regularly to prevent obstruction to the pavement and road. Our Cleansing and Highways teams also have no record of any vegetation removal along this stretch and as glyphosate is no longer used by the Council, it could be these works were carried out by a private contractor or individual. This report is now closed and further comments may not be monitored. If the issue persists, please log a new report.
