Distortion and cracking of the tarmac pavement around the tree outside 7 Shakespeare Avenue
Reported via desktop in the Pavement damage category anonymously at 11:20, Wed 3 September 2025
Sent to Bath and North East Somerset Council less than a minute later. Council ref: 8112615.
The distortion and cracking of the tarmac pavement around the tree outside 7 Shakespeare Avenue is increasing continually. From measurements taken on 30 August 2025 the height of the pavement next to the tree is now approximately 180 mm higher than the tarmac to the east and west of it, and the slope on the west side of the hump is very steep. This creates a significant hazard to pedestrians using the pavement, especially now that the days are becoming shorter and weather conditions worsening. The pavement will soon be covered with fallen leaves which will exacerbate the risk. It also means that we have to step onto an uneven pavement when we exit our property. As we are both over 80 we are concerned that this could cause a fall resulting in serious injury to ourselves, or to visitors or delivery personnel. Your report dated 21 May 2025 of the excavation carried out on 5 February 2025 acknowledges that the tree, (species Ostrya Carpinifolia) which will have a mature height of 20 metres, and commensurate root spread, has to be dealt with as it is inherently unsuitable for its location. The only permanent solution is to remove the tree and its root system, and replace it with a tree more appropriate to the location. This work needs to be addressed on an urgent basis. Please advise by return when the work to remove the both tree and its roots will be carried out.

Thank you for your update. We wish to stress once again that in view of the projected mature size of the tree, 20 metres high, and the rate at which its roots are growing, the only permanent solution is to replace the tree with a species more suitable to its location, so as to prevent any further damage to the pavement and surrounding properties by the root system.
