  I am writing to lodge a formal complaint, report a hazardous road defect on Haydon Lanes, and notify you of my intention to claim compensation for vehicle damage directly caused by this defect.

  On the evening of 8 February 2026, while driving along Haydon Lanes in darkness, my vehicle struck a large, unrepaired pothole. Due to poor visibility at night, combined with inadequate warning signs, reflective markings, or sufficient street lighting to highlight the hazard, I was unable to detect or avoid it. The severe impact immediately caused my tyre to burst and also resulted in significant damage to the associated alloy wheel, rendering the vehicle undriveable and requiring emergency roadside assistance.

  This pothole constitutes a clear and foreseeable danger to road users, particularly in low-light conditions, and appears to have been present without timely repair or adequate mitigation. I consider this a failure by the council to fulfil its duty under the Highways Act 1980 to maintain the highway in a reasonably safe condition.

  As a direct consequence of hitting this pothole, I have incurred the following costs and inconvenience:

  Replacement of the burst tyre: £80.Damage to the alloy wheel requiring replacement/repair: £300 for replacement or £80–£150 for refurbishment.
