Confusing signals
Sent to Bath and North East Somerset Council less than a minute later. Council ref: 8823526.
This junction is confusing for drivers and pedestrians, causing dangerous driving and associated risks. 1. There is no safe crossing of North Parade between this junction and the leisure centre 2. There is no hatched yellow area AND a confusing red light at the pedestrian crossing meaning that cars going straight on from Bathwick to Widcombe on the A36 stop and block the junction when the light turns red. This is despite the pedestrian crossing showing red man to pedestrians, and there being plenty of space beyond the pedestrian crossing to pull into. This prevents cars turning right from north parade onto the A36 causing standstill at this junction and congestion further afield , preventing left turns too. 3. A simple solution would be to yellow hatch this area, so cars don’t pull forward on a green light and then stop in the junction when it turns red. 4. For drivers, turning right into north parade from the A36 bathwick side, the green arrow doesn’t always appear, leaving right turners sometimes stranded. 5. The junction could be made considerably more pedestrian friendly. Its near the leisure centre and many people including students and children cross dangerously because of the confusion. Twice this evening i have witnessed reckless drivers trying to circumvent cautious drivers who haven’t cleared the junction due to the red light, traffic at a standstill and pedestrians taking risks crossing despite it not being their turn.

The offence for going through a red is combined with passing the stop line. If cars have already passed the stop line then they should continue if in traffic. Basic driving 101. If they stop at the Red light that is not for them, that is their bad driving, blame them and not the council.
If turning right from Bathwick area into North Parade you need to pull forward, if you don’t, the loop in the road doesn’t sense a car there so doesn’t trigger the filter arrow. This is done so the filter arrow doesn’t come on and lengthen the time others have to wait when no car is there. Also a yellow box there would be pointless as you can still enter it if your exit is clear so if they can’t pull into north parade because of the selfish drivers who haven’t for 2.5 seconds spare in their important life to let someone cross into North Parade thus adding to congestion, then that again is a human issue and not a council one.
Websites like this frustrate me as we always blame the council and not the human element, easier I suppose.
